Foods to boost immunity

During the winter months with temperature changing from warm to cold, being inside with central heating and getting caught out because it's much colder outside than we expect, any one of us can be caught out by coughs, colds and winter chills.

Of course it is important to take care of our natural immunity. Adding vegetables and fruits to your diet along with some nuts, poultry and fish will provide you with a wide range of antioxidants.  Antioxidants help to protect your cells from free radicals that can cause ill health.  Free radicals are molecules that are produced by the body breaking down food or when the body is exposed to pollution e.g. tobacco smoke

Fruits that are high in antioxidants are cranberries, red grapes, strawberries, raspberries, figs, pears, oranges, apricots, mango, watermelon, cherries and goji berries. Why not try adding some to your porridge or even sprinkle some cranberries into a salad.  I like to add chopped oranges and un-sulphured apricots to a raw red cabbage salad it makes an interesting mix of colour and adds to the flavour.  Vegetables include artichokes, kale, red cabbage, beetroot, spinach, tomatoes.

Exercise is another thing to consider as it is so good for our emotional wellbeing. Taking a walk in the fresh air, dancing, yoga, pilates all help to release endorphins, known as happiness hormones and feeling good is certainly a bonus in the winter months when people often feel miserable due to the long dark days/nights.

Say goodbye to any negative emotions that you may be hanging on to, these do not serve us well. Turn your attention to things that make you feel good instead.  Meditation can help with this as it helps to focus and settle the mind.

Avoid processed foods as they are often laden with sugar and other additives

Stay hydrated.  It's best to avoid fizzy drinks they tend to be high in sugar and don't hydrate you as well as water. You can flavour your own water; cut up some lemons and limes and infuse them in a jug of water.

Open the bedroom windows for a little while and air your home

Include a probiotic this will help support the integrity of your gut and they are good for the immune system.

Plan a visit to your homeopath, nutritionist or other health professional to review your overall health.  There are a number of homeopathic remedies that can help you combat those winter coughs, colds and chills.

Sprains and Strains -

While many people are aware of the homeopathic remedy #Arnica widely used for bumps and bruises, another useful remedy for your home first aid kit is Ruta Graveolens (Garden Rue).  Here are some of the reasons to choose Ruta.

Sprains and strains to tendons respond well to this remedy.  The injured part can feel bruised and sore along with aching and weakness.  You may feel anxious and lethargic but the pains can make you restless as you try and find a position that gives relief.   If backache, caused by an injury or a strain is the issue you will find that lying on your back could ease the discomfort.

In wet or icy conditions it's easy to slip and, as you try to recover from the embarrassment of falling over and hurting yourself even more, you could put a strain on your muscles or tendons.  Sprained or twisted ankles are common when we are rushing around trying to fit in all those last minute jobs and because we are hurried it's easy to miss our footing.   The ankles may be swollen, the hamstrings can feel shortened, there could be pain along the sciatic nerve and the tendons feel sore.

I have found Ruta immensely helpful when my eyes are tired and strained after I have been on the computer for any length of time exacerbated by the use of artificial lighting.  Changes in the way that our lives have been affected in the past two years has meant that working or studying from home has increased the time that we spend in front of computer screens.

Ruta can also be used for chills.  Coldness and shivering accompanied with feeling very thirsty and the inability to get warm even in a warm room.

This is just a brief overview of how one #homeopathic remedy can help speed up recovery of minor injuries.

How homeopathy can support you during/after surgery

How homeopathy can support you before/after surgery

There will be times in your life when the need for some sort of surgery may be necessary whether it is a minor surgical procedure or a more complicated situation.

The thought of going into hospital is daunting and nerve wracking to say the least and can lead to panic attacks many days or even weeks before planned surgery.  I recall going into hospital many years ago when a small lump was found.  I didn't want to mention it to my parents and put them through any form of worry but the night before I was due to go in I had a bout of diarrhoea and sickness due to the fear of the procedure.   I am delighted to say that the lump was benign and I have very good health.

So what can be done to help you if you do have to undergo surgery. Naturally you will be full of anticipation worrying about how your family will cope while you are in hospital and how long it will take you to recover, so you will be organising time off work, family and friends taking and collecting your children from school, looking after pets, exercising your horse and so forth.  And who is going to cook your meals if you are liable to be bed bound?

Let's start with some homeopathic remedies for the anxiety and anticipation:

Aconite Napellus - this remedy is wonderful when there is a shock to your system and the anxiety is so great that you

Argentum Nitricum - take this remedy if your anticipation is so great that you find yourself craving sweet foods and then suffer with diarrhoea

Gelsemium - when you feel that you have butterflies in your tummy, trembling and continually need to visit the bathroom to empty your bladder.

So once the surgery has been carried out you may wish to take some remedies to speed up your recovery.

Phosphorus is a great remedy if you suffer from sickness after anaesthesia.

Arnica will be helpful if you are bruised after surgery, even if a small biopsy has been taken from a sensitive tender area (i.e. breast).

Staphysagria is an excellent remedy for healing wounds and for the post-operative wind that can occur.

Speaking to your own homeopath is the best course of action to take prior to any investigations since your homeopath will know you best and what remedies will be the most suitable.

Homeopathic remedies can help with the anxiety prior to any surgery and will help you on your way to a faster recovery.

For Homeopathy Awareness Week day 6 I thought I would share with you just how much homeopathy has played a part in our lives over the past 30 years. Initially my husband was unsure of this form of medicine until he experienced its beneficial effects when he was suffering from the ‘flu. He is now a firm advocate and although offered the annual ‘flu vaccine prefers to refuse it. My mother, son, sister and niece have all experienced the benefits of homeopathy to aid their recovery from surgery ranging from post-operative vomiting to healing scar tissue.

Our medicine box is purely homeopathic and even our pets respond well.

HOMEOPATHY AWARENESS WEEK 2017 (Part 1)

Homeopathy Awareness Week 2017: Day 1

Homeopathy Awareness Week (10-17 April) commemorates the birthday of Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843) the founding father of homeopathy.

Having originally trained as a medical doctor in Germany he became appalled at the barbaric acts of medicine carried out by his contemporaries.  He left medicine and turned to translating articles as a means of earning a living and whilst undertaking a translation for William Cullen he became interested in the workings of Cinchona Bark (Quinine) and its use in the treatment of malaria.

Being an inquisitive man he took it upon himself to experiment with Cinchona Bark and in doing so he experienced the symptoms of malaria, the very disease that Cinchona Bark was meant to treat proving the principle of 'similia similibus curenta' let likes be treated by likes.  Hahnemann and his colleagues repeated his experiments resulting in him publishing a materia medica of homeopathic medicines and spent his life honing his art to what we now know today.  Hahnemann's article Essay on a New Principle for Ascertaining Curative Power of Drugs (1) was published in Hufeland's Medical Journal in 1796, the same year as Edward Jenner experimented with the smallpox vaccine so in fact they were both using the principle of similars.   1796 became the birth of a new system of gentle, non-toxic, non-addictive form of medicine known as homeopathy.

When my youngest son had difficulty teething it led me to seek out the help of a homeopath and having experienced first hand its beneficial effects I trained in homeopathy obtaining my qualification over twenty years ago.  My mission was and continues to be to help clients   improve their health and well-being with the aid of homeopathy.

Homeopathy Awareness Week 2017: Day 2

It's homeopathy awareness week, day two
Are you wondering if homeopathy will work for you?
When I sought advice due to worries and strife
I was asked detailed questions about my life

Why did it matter what I thought about the weather
Would it help find the remedy that would make me better?
My homeopath searched through her repertory
And I can definitely say “Homeopathy Worked for Me”

I went on to study this wonderful art
So that helping others I could play my part
I work with adults and children too
So I would say yes, homeopathy will work for you

You may ask can it work for eczema and asthma too
And my child has autistic tendencies what can I do?
In order to choose the most suitable remedy
I will need to take a detailed case history

A remedy matching your symptoms is what I seek to find
Since homeopathy works on body, soul and mind
Whether it is Natrum Mur, Gelsemium or Ferrum Pic
Rest assured the remedies are non-toxic

So again I say ‘Homeopathy worked for me’
And yes it can work for you and your family
